Making Lemonade

Christmas weather in southwest Louisiana is quite different than how it seems that it should be to me. Typically when I think of what weather should be like around Christmastime I think of cold days where coats and hot chocolate are a must. But it seems that no matter how cold the weeks leading up to Christmas may be here, the few days before Christmas and sometimes Christmas Day itself is filled with weather than is more suitable for shorts and flip flops than coats and boots. And this year was no exception. It was really cold the first few weeks in December, but the past couple of days have been in the 70s. It kinda makes it not seem like Christmas with weather like this. No ice skating, snowball fights, or snow cream making happening in these parts. But places where you can do those things cannot do what we did today. Today we made lemonade. We went crabbing!

I have been wanting to go for a while now, and we just haven't made the time to do it. Aaron ran into the Sorensen's today at Walmart and found out that they were going crabbing and I think he pretty much invited us to tag along with them. (Thanks for letting us invite ourselves guys!)

Now I won't lie and say it was a breeze with John David there. But most things with him are much more difficult at the age that he is. We had to watch him constantly, which meant that I followed him around and didn't get to crab at all. But I did get to watch and snap a few pictures, and it was fun just being there. I do believe it will be much more enjoyable for Aaron and I though when he is a little older. He on the other hand, had a blast carrying around Sarah's fishing pole and pretending to fish.

Sarah, however, was not very happy about John David having her fishing pole.

She was worried that he was going to break it. So it took us a good 20 minutes to talk her into trying out crabbing. But she liked it when she finally gave it a try.

Katie on the other hand was hooked immediately.

She even made the first catch of the day.

She was pretty excited about that.

And I scooped it up with the net.

And before long our cooler looked like this.

Okay, so that cooler wasn't ours. It belonged to the people beside us. I don't know how long they had been there, but they had almost a cooler full. I think they were pros. They said they were going to go home and boil them and eat them for supper, and use some of it to make gumbo too. That is what we plan to do on our next crabbing adventure--catch enough to come home and boil them. But this time was more for the experience for us, since we knew we wouldn't be able to be there long enough to catch a cooler full.

It was just nice being there and watching.

This little guy really enjoyed himself.

He had no clue he wasn't really fishing.

Just happy to be outside.

And loving every minute of it. Life is sweeter when you make lemonade, instead of just looking at the lemons.

I use to go crabbing with my aunt and uncle down there. We would also go to the beach at Holly Beach. What do I remember most? The fried chicken my aunt would bring and the strawberry malt I would get in Hackberry. Great memories!
